What to expect in AP Biology practice

AP Biology · current eight-unit practice. 60 four-choice questions in 90 minutes, a full 10-minute break, then two long and four short free responses sharing 90 minutes. Original simulated investigations, new data and figures, and graph/model drawing tools. Source-bank variants reuse some questions and scenarios. Writing and drawings save for rubric-guided review. Instructional question families recur across variants; these are not independently equated official exams. Editorial review edition 5: revised questions, explanations and skill coverage. Difficulty is an editorial estimate; recurring families are not independent or psychometrically equated tests. Duplicate-reviewed questions use distinct givens or evidence; shared instructional skills and reasoning families recur.

Start with the default section countdowns for this practice format. Custom pacing lets you shorten or extend section times when working on speed, and your report identifies adjusted timing. Check the exam administrator’s current guidance for official test-day requirements.

AP Biology subjects and lesson topics

Lessons combine a worked example, guided exploration and checked exercises. Required steps must be completed before a lesson counts toward your progress. These are available study topics, not a guarantee of official exam coverage or a score increase.

Multiple Choice · Section I

  • 1.1 Structure of Water and Hydrogen Bonding

Connect water’s polarity and hydrogen bonding to cohesion, temperature stability, and biological transport. Distinguish bonds within a molecule from attractions among molecules.

  • 1.2 Elements of Life

Track carbon, nitrogen, phosphorus, and sulfur through biological molecules. Explain why growing organisms require matter as well as energy.

  • 1.3 Introduction to Macromolecules

Relate building blocks, covalent assembly, and hydrolysis to biological macromolecules. Avoid assuming all large biological molecules are repeating-unit polymers.

  • 1.4 Carbohydrates

Connect carbohydrate linkage and branching with energy storage and structural support. Explain function through molecular arrangement rather than naming a sugar alone.

  • 1.5 Lipids

Relate lipid structure to membranes and energy storage. Compare nonpolar hydrocarbon regions with the amphipathic organization of phospholipids.

Science Practices

  • Concept Explanation

Build a biological explanation by connecting a specific change with a mechanism and a measured consequence. Distinguish description, explanation, prediction, and justification.

  • Visual Models and Representation

Create and interpret models using meaningful boundaries, labels, arrows, and relationships. A requested graph or drawing must be produced, not replaced only by a description.

  • Questions and Methods

Design a biological investigation with a testable question, defined variables, independent replication, and meaningful controls. Separate a treatment effect from the effect of handling or apparatus.

  • Representing and Describing Data

Build graphs that communicate the measured relationship accurately. Select a representation from the data structure and follow the requested plotting instructions.

  • Statistical Tests and Data Analysis

Use sample variability, uncertainty of a mean, and chi-square testing for appropriate data. State the null model and distinguish rejecting it from proving an alternative mechanism.

Free Response · Section II

  • Scientific Argumentation and Free Response

Answer every requested part with a claim, specific evidence, and biological reasoning. Construct requested graphs or models as well as written explanations. Practice responses support rubric-guided review without a validated AP 1–5 prediction.

Exam Workshop

  • Formulas Units and Calculator Practice

Use the official equations reference to select a relationship, define symbols, and preserve units. For 2027, use a permitted four-function calculator with square root or a permitted non-graphing scientific calculator; handheld graphing or storage-capable models are not allowed under the current policy.

  • Exam Pacing and Paper Graphing

Practice the current structure: 60 multiple-choice questions in 90 minutes, a full 10-minute break, then six free-response questions sharing 90 minutes. The official hybrid exam presents questions digitally and uses handwritten free responses.

Turn your results into your next study session

  1. Complete a practice test. Set aside the time required by the selected form and submit your answers so the result can be saved.
  2. Review the missed questions. Read the correct choices and explanations. Written responses use the provided review guidance where applicable.
  3. Practice the underlying skill. Choose a lesson from the subjects above. Use available targeted practice and your mistake notebook according to your access.
  4. Plan the next attempt. Your calendar records completed activities, and PDF reports help you review progress over time.
